Scholarship applications open for underrepresented students in the chemical sciences

The American Chemical Society (ACS) Scholars Program is offering renewable scholarships of $1,000 to $5,000 per year for African American, Hispanic/Latinx and Native American students majoring in chemistry-related fields and pursuing chemistry-related careers. Qualified students may be studying at community colleges or four-year institutions. Graduating high school seniors and college freshmen, sophomores and juniors may apply.

Eligible majors include, but are not limited to, chemistry, materials science, forensic chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering and chemical technology. Students pursuing pre-med, pharmacy, nursing or veterinary programs are not eligible.

In addition to providing financial support, the ACS Scholars Program pairs students with academic and/or professional mentors. These relationships can span entire careers. Conference travel awards and several internship opportunities are also offered.

Scholarship applications will be accepted online at the ACS Scholars Program website www.acs.org/scholars through March 1, 2020, for the academic year 2020-21. Additional information is available by calling 1-800-227-5558, extension 6250, or by emailing [email protected].

The Scholars program, now celebrating a milestone of 25 years, aims to build awareness of the value and rewards associated with careers in chemistry and help students acquire the skills and credentials needed for success. More than 1,700 ACS Scholars have graduated with a bachelor’s degree in the chemical sciences, and a substantial number have gone on to graduate school and/or have entered the workforce in their field. The program awards more than $1 million in scholarship funds to 400 students annually.

Warm regards,
ACS Scholars Staff

D. E. Shaw Research
Science and Engineering Summit for Undergraduates
Friday, April 3, 2020

D. E. Shaw Research (DESRES) seeks exceptional undergraduates pursuing degrees in the computational sciences to join us at our Science and Engineering Summit for Undergraduates.  This event will take place on Friday, April 3, 2030, and will bring students pursuing bachelor’s degrees in science and engineering to our offices in New York City for a day of presentations, discussions, networking, and plenty of refreshments!  This is an opportunity to learn about the internship and career opportunities available at DESRES, explore our scientific computing and research projects in detail, and connect with other students from across the country who share your interest in science and technology.

Enjoy the vantage point from our Times Square office and an evening in New York City on us!  We will cover the cost of travel to and from New York as well as hotel accommodations for two nights for all selected attendees.

If you are studying computer science, engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, applied math, materials science, or another scientific field with a focus on computational methods, and are interested in attending this event, please email your resume and a short statement of interest (approx. 200 words) to [email protected] with the subject line “2020 Summit Application” by Tuesday, February 18, 2020.  We can only invite a limited number of attendees to the summit, but we welcome submissions from students of all experience levels.

D. E. Shaw Research is a New York–based independent research laboratory that conducts basic scientific research in the field of computational biochemistry under the direct scientific leadership of Dr. David Shaw. Our group is currently focusing primarily on long molecular dynamics simulations involving proteins and other biological macromolecules of potential interest from both a scientific and a pharmaceutical perspective. An integral part of our effort consists of designing and developing custom hardware and software to carry out this research. We are also pursuing drug discovery programs, leveraging the insights enabled by our novel technologies, with an initial focus on drug targets that have proved resistant to traditional drug discovery methods. For more information about the group, please visit www.DEShawResearch.com.
