Event Date: Thursday, May 4, 2023 from 8 am - 3 pm Empower Diversity in STEM Day is the result of a collaboration between the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI), the Organization for Cultural Diversity in Science (OCDS), and the UCLA Chapter of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS). Our goal is to bring high school students from underrepresented backgrounds to UCLA to give them a sense of belonging in higher education, particularly STEM. We will be inviting 60 high school students to participate in a science-filled field trip to UCLA on Thursday, May 4, 2023 from 8 am - 3 pm. Students will tour UCLA’s campus, see the inside of chemistry labs, learn about a variety of science subfields, and interact with UCLA STEM undergraduate and graduate students. Not only will students learn about the diversity of the STEM discipline, but they will also learn from our generous and passionate UCLA students from diverse backgrounds. We want to celebrate and empower diversity in STEM. During the event, the UCLA SACNAS chapter will host an undergraduate panel geared towards addressing questions that high school students may have about how to apply to college, the transition from high school to undergraduate studies, and overall campus life. We are hoping to put together a diverse panel consisting of students from a broad range of STEM fields. If you are interested in becoming a panelist and sharing your undergraduate experience, please fill out the form below! Lunch and an "Empower Diversity in STEM" t-shirt will be provided to all volunteers! Feel free to email the UCLA SACNAS outreach coordinators at [email protected] if you have any questions.
